What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters is an international, non-profit organisation that provides self-motivated individuals the opportunity to improve themselves in the following areas:
- Public Speaking, Communication & Presentation skills
- Leadership skills
- Organisational skills
- Time management skills
- Meeting skills
What can Toastmasters do for you?
The Toastmasters program is self-paced and tailored to meet your personal objectives: whether it is to improve in delivering prepared or impromptu speeches, to practice with visual aids, or to conduct effective meetings.
You will gain experience and knowledge in areas that most interest you.
When and where are the meetings?
We meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Highway Hotel Board Room, corner of Spencer Street and Forrest Avenue, Bunbury. Please arrive by 6:15pm for a 6:30pm meeting start. The first three meetings are free to visitors.
What happens at a meeting?
Meetings are run similar to a normal business meeting. There is an agenda with a number of different roles. Each role is outlined below:
Sergeant At Arms:
This is an exciting role where you simply open the meeting and welcome everyone. Let the guests know that they will be invited to participate in Table topics and that it is OK to say no. Hand back to the toastmaster of the evening.
Um/Er Counter:
This is a fun role. You count how many times each person says a filler word such as um, er, so, you know. At the end of the meeting you stand up and say Fiona said um 10 times er 3 times and "you know" twice, Angela said um 4 times, Stefan said er 3 times etc.
The idea is that it helps us become aware of when we say um instead of pausing until we remember what we want to say.
Toastmaster:
The is the leader of the meeting, making sure the agenda is followed and introducing the various participants.
Timekeeper:
This role times, records and reports the time used by each participant (eg. speakers, evaluators). Coloured lights and a buzzer are used to help speakers This is an important role as one of the purposes of Toastmasters is to ensure our members learn how to express a thought within a specific timeframe.
Speakers:
Typically there are two to four speakers. Each one gives a prepared speech, usually 5 to 7 minutes. Each speech has specific objectives.
Table Topics Master:
This is a fun activity where topics of general interest are selected and questions asked of members and guests in the audience. This helps people practice the skill of thinking on their feet.
Table Topics Speaker:
Each speaker receives a different topic or question and participants are called on at random. Impromptu speeches are allocated 60 seconds each.
Read / Recite / Joke of the Day
Read or Recite provides members with an opportunity to exercise vocal variety and body language in the delivery of a piece written by someone else. Children’s stories and excerpts from famous speeches are examples of such material.
Joke of the Day needs to be appropriate for the settings and people involved.
General Evaluator:
Provides constructive feedback on the meeting in general. He or she is in charge of the individual evaluators, the timer, and the grammarian.
Evaluators:
The purpose of the evaluator is to motivate the speaker to continue speaking and to improve. The evaluator lets the speaker know what areas he or she has excelled in, and also offers a few constructive suggestions to help the speaker improve. The evaluator gives an oral review as well as a written review.
Workshop / Educational Presenter
The purpose of this role is for the member to present information that may be of use to club members. It could be how to navigate Toastmasters International, how to use the club website, tips on speech writing, hints for delivering speeches, educating members on how to create a vision board or set goals, anything that members may find helpful.
How do I join?
We strongly encourage you to come and visit the club to see how we run our meetings for yourself. At the end of the night, you will be given a guest pack which should cover all of the important questions. A Club Membership Application form is included and once submitted to the Vice President of Membership or any other club officers they will organise your membership with Toastmasters International.
How much does it cost?
Membership fees are due every six months, collected prior to April 1st and October 1st each year. There is a one-off joining fee for Toastmasters International, which includes your first Pathway and the official Toastmasters International magazine. The remainder of the fees support club operational costs and cover the cost of your name badge.
Current new member fees are $150.00. Renewing members - $120.00
If you join partway during the 6-month cycle, your membership fee may be calculated on a pro-rata basis. Your membership can be transferred to other clubs if required.
